Who Can Vote
New for 2025 — With the proclamation of the Municipal Affairs Statutes Amendment Act, 2024 (Bill 20), municipalities are required to maintain a Permanent Electors Register of residents who are eligible to vote. Any individual who wishes to vote on Election Day must first be registered.
Elections Alberta maintains a provincial register of electors and provides VoterLink for voters to register, update information, or verify their registration.

Information required for the Permanent Electors Register will be shared between Elections Alberta and the Village of Irma as per the Local Authorities Election Act (LAEA) section 49. The information collected may only be used to verify the identification of an elector when compiling or revising the Permanent Electors Register.
You Can Vote If:
- You are a Canadian Citizen
- You are 18+ years of age; and
- You are a resident of Irma on the date of election
How to Determine Residency
- a person may be a resident of only one place at a time for the purposes of voting under this Act;
- if a person has more than one residence in Alberta, that person shall, designate one place of residence as the person’s place of residence for the purposes of this election.
- the residence of a person is the place where the person lives and sleeps and to which, when the person is absent, the person intends to return;
- a person does not lose the person’s residence by leaving the person’s home for a temporary purpose;
- if a person leaves the area with the intention of making the person’s residence elsewhere, the person loses the person’s residence within the area.
- a person shall designate the person’s place of residence in accordance with the
following factors in the following order of priority:- the address shown on the person’s driver’s licence or motor vehicle operator’s licence issued by or on behalf of the Government of Alberta or an identification card issued by or on behalf of the Government of Alberta;
- the address to which the person’s income tax correspondence is addressed and delivered;
- the address to which the person’s mail is addressed and delivered.
Register to Vote
Permanent Electors Registry
You will need to access VoterLink in order to be added to the Village of Irma’s Permanent Electors Registry by September 15th, 2025.
If you cannot access the VoterLink to register online, you can:
- contact Elections Alberta at 780-427-7191 or email info@elections.ab.ca
- fill out Form 13 – Elector Register and produce one piece of identification issued by a Canadian government, whether federal, provincial, or local, or an agency of that government, that contains a photograph.
Elector Register forms will be provided at the Voting Station, but can be filled out in advance and brought to the voting station on election day.
Election Day
If you are registered on the Permanent Electors Register:
- you will need to provide one piece of Government-issued photo ID that includes your full name and current address
If you are NOT registered on the Permanent Electors Register, you must:
- fill out Form 13 – Elector Register, whether it is done ahead of time or at the voting station
- validate your identity and address of residency by producing one (1) of the following:
- one piece of Government-issued photo ID that includes your full name and current address
- one piece of identification authorized under the Election Act (s.100(2)(b)) that establishes your name and current address of residence
ID Required to Vote
To vote, you must prove your identity and current address. To do this, you may:
- Provide one piece of Government-issued photo ID, including your full name, current address, and photo
- Provide two pieces of ID, both containing your full name, and with one showing your current physical address
- Have another registered elector in your voting area vouch for you
- Have an authorized signatory complete an attestation form
